Holly Springs Funeral Home

Peggy Moffitt Ormon

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother,
Grandmother, and friend, Peggy Ann (Massengill) Moffitt, who departed this life on
Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the age of 79.
Born on June 11, 1945, to Clinton and Dessie Massengill, Peggy spent the majority of
her childhood in Hickory Flat where she met her husband, Jerry. She began her career
at Denton Mills where she was the office manager and then went on to receive her
bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Blue Mountain College where she and
her son Greg were the first mother/son graduating duo. She then attended Mississippi
College and received her master’s degree in education. Peggy dedicated her life to
education, touching the hearts and minds of countless students over her 25 years as a
teacher. Her passion for learning and unwavering belief in the potential of every child
left a lasting mark on the generations she guided. Even after retiring, she remained a
mentor, sharing her wisdom and love of knowledge with her grandchildren, great-
grandchildren and all who knew her. After the loss of her beloved husband Jerry, she
fulfilled the position as interim Sherriff of Benton County in 2001. She later married
Sammie Ormon with whom she enjoyed traveling to cow shows. With his convincing
humor, she was persuaded to purchase her own cows. During her life, she spent a great
deal of time serving her community. She was on the Board of Alderman for two terms
and later was elected as the Mayor of Hickory Flat. She was excited to know that she
and her son Clint would be the first mother/son Mayor and successor come July 1,
2025.
Beyond her career, she was the heart of her family, a source of warmth, wisdom, and
unconditional love. She cherished time spent with her loved ones, whether camping,
going on family vacations, drinking coffee, writing poems, or sharing stories that brought
laughter and joy. Peggy loved heirlooms and enjoyed getting to watch her son, Gerry
Paul, restore her father’s Freightliner. She also enjoyed reading, which was fueled by
the desire to be a life-long learner. Her kindness, strong spirit, and unwavering strength
will forever be remembered. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and the
Benton County Republican Women’s Club.
She will be lovingly remembered by her three sons, Gregory Moffitt (Janet), Gerry Paul
Moffitt (Bonnie), and Clinton Moffitt (Stephanie); six grandchildren, Stephen Moffitt
(Caley), Joshua Moffitt (Kelsea), Elizabeth Taylor (Seth), Olivia Moffitt, CJ Moffitt, and
McKenley Moffitt; eight Great-Grandchildren: Penny Moffitt, Peyton Moffitt, Owen Moffitt,
Cassidy Moffitt, Eli Moffitt, Hudson Moffitt, Ayres Taylor, and Benton Taylor; her sister
Jewel Smith and brother Billy Massengill; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and
a host of friends who will continue to carry her love and lessons in their hearts. She is
now reunited with her husband Jerry Moffitt, her father Clinton Massengill, mother
Dessie Massengill, her daughter-in-law Bonnie Moffitt, Sammie Ormon, and other family
members who passed before her, watching over us with love.

Peggy was an amazing woman and a great mentor. There was nothing I don’t think you couldn’t sit down and talk to her about and she wouldn’t do her best to help you the best she could with either her advice, conversation, or just her laughter. She will be greatly missed.

I loved Peggy and will miss her loving spirit. She was a good friend and always seemed to know when someone was in need. I enjoyed the years she served as alderwoman and I worked as the town clerk. I learned a lot about her during that time. She was a great business lady, she cared so much about the town and its people. I loved the fact that her and Jerry always had time to talk to my nephew, Gene. That meant so much to him to have both as wonderful friends. I remember one year the girls basketball team went to state. My daughter Tracey played at the time. We had just got home from Jackson one day and they were having games again that night. Gene was over there at Jerry’s and come bouncing back across the street. He says I’m gone Aunt Cheryl!! I said where you going. He says with Jerry to Jackson see ya later. He was so glad to go with him. I could tell many things about them but I’ll stop here. Thank you Peggy for your caring heart. I wont forget you!
With love
Cheryl and family
