Kate “Katey” Marie Jones
Kate M Jones, 59, of Slayden, Mississippi, passed away September 14, 2021, in Oxford. Katey was born on December 6, 1961, in Memphis, Tennessee. She graduated from Marshall Academy in 1979, and attended the University of Memphis. She worked for many years at Dan West Garden Center in Memphis, and operated her own floral shop in Collierville, as Town Square Flowers, before returning to the family business at Jones Greenhouses in Slayden. She was dedicated to growing the family business and building relationships with her customers.
She was an active member of Slayden Baptist Church, and was a devoted VBS volunteer with crafts and snacks. She was a talented florist and often made arrangements for the church, weddings, Valentine's Day, and other special events. Katey had a passion for baking, and often made cakes, cupcakes, and Christmas goodies for many people. She collected recipes and produced a series of cookbooks for Slayden Baptist Church. Katey had a true servant's heart. She loved every opportunity to give of herself, and she was known throughout the community for her giving spirit. She deeply loved her family and friends. Katey was most passionate about Operation Christmas Child and purchased supplies year round for the annual collection of shoeboxes that would deliver the message of Jesus to children around the world.
Katey was preceded in death by her father, John "Johnny" Boyce Jones Jr. She is survived by her mother, Betty Jones of Slayden, her brother, Chris Jones (Lisa) of Slayden, her sister Jill McCracken (Michael) of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and her brother Jody (Cathy) of Slayden. She was a second mom to her niece and nephews and great nieces and nephews; Ethan Jones (Emily, Amos,Ezra), Nealy DeShazo (Kerry, Pearson, Austin), Russell Anderson, Cory Anderson, Hayden McCracken (Savannah), Kirby Jones (Meredith, Kamden) and Heath McCracken. She was also known as Aunt Katey to many others in the community.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 3:00 pm, and the funeral service will begin at 3:00 pm on Sunday, September 19, at Slayden Baptist Church. The church address is 2534 Highway 72, Lamar, Mississippi. Interment will follow at Slayden Cemetery. The graveside service will be for immediate family only. The Holly Springs Funeral Home has charge. The family is requesting that everyone wear a mask to the services.
